Open Your Eyes: The Battle for Education

Posted on 17th July 2026

Open Your Eyes: The Battle for Education follows the stories of deaf students and their parents and their legal battles against their local authorities and schools to provide essential educational needs led by deaf reporter Erika Jones.

The investigation addresses concerning issues for deaf children and their families, why are these special education needs not being met and who is responsible for the failures?

The UK government released a White Paper, “Every Child Achieving and Thriving,” alongside a major public consultation: “SEND Reform: Putting Children and Young People First.”

More than just policy talk—this is a critical turning point for the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system, which has been at a breaking point for years. Decisions made right now will shape the classroom experience, funding, and support structures for millions of young people over the next decade.

In our Open Your Eyes investigation, Erika Jones dives straight into the heart of this unfolding crisis. We explore what these proposed reforms actually mean, who they stand to help, and why so many families feel like they are locked in a constant battle just to get their children the basic education they deserve.

This half an hour BSL programme is a co-production between Rare TV and Flashing Lights Media for LumoTV. Reported by Erika Jones, executively produced by Emma Barker and Emma Glassar, and directed by Simon Gilchrist.
