Unmasking, a brand-new documentary is out now on LumoTV. The film follows Lara Scott.
Lara was born Deaf and, at 19, learned that she would experience significant changes to her vision over time. While her close friends and family know about this, Lara often finds herself downplaying the realities of being Deafblind, even with those closest to her.
In this film, Lara embarks on a personal journey to explore Deafblind identity, belonging, and connection. She asks why so many Deafblind people feel pressure to hide aspects of themselves, why they can become isolated within both Deaf and hearing communities, and what it means to live confidently as a Deafblind person.
Along the way, Lara has honest and challenging conversations with Deaf friends and family about attitudes towards Deafblind people and the barriers they face as they start to rely more on touch. She meets Deafblind psychologist Jo Atkinson, learns to navigate through touch and explores Protactile, a rich, hands-on language and communication philosophy which has emerged within other Deafblind communities outside the UK.
Months later, Lara looks back on what she has learned about connecting more deeply with herself and others. The film follows her growing sense of belonging and her determination to help create new possibilities for herself and other Deafblind people.
A Mutt & Jeff production for LumoTV.
